Orrin Hatch
for President 2000 Campaign Brochure
‘Proven
Principled The Common-Sense Conservative’
The Pledge
I, ORRIN HATCH, do hereby pledge to
make a top priority of my Administration:
Reducing taxes, abolishing the IRS,
and creating rewarding jobs;
Safeguarding our promises to Social
Security and Medicare beneficiaries;
Revitalizing and re-equipping our
armed services;
Appointing judges who respect the
Constitution, will be tough on crime and drug dealers, and believe
in the rule of law;
Defending the 2nd Amendment;
Making sure the American health
care system is the best in the world;
Protecting the right to life and
the sanctity of life;
Promoting the ability of children
to be educated in a safe, secure, friendly learning environment; and
Restoring integrity, candor, and
personal honesty to the White House.
The Record
Senator Hatch gets things done. A
champion of conservative principles, he has never failed to stand up
for what is right. He has defeated countless bills designed to
expand the power of the federal bureaucracy and, at the same time,
has authored some of the most important and praised legislation that
has brought common sense, conservative solutions to the real
problems affecting our country.
Highlights include:
THE DRUG PRICE COMPETITION AND
PATENT TERM RESTORATION ACT which has stimulated pharmaceutical
research while saving consumers and taxpayers billions of dollars
THE PUPIL PROTECTION AMENDMENT
which allows parents to inspect federally-funded experimental school
curriculum and testing
THE ANTI-TERRORISM AND EFFECTIVE
DEATH PENALTY ACT
THE CHILD HEALTH INSURANCE AND
LOWER DEFICIT ACT a federal-state partnership that provides health
insurance to the children of the working poor
THE CAPITAL FORMATION ACT which
reduced the capital gains tax for individuals
THE ORPHAN DRUG ACT which
encourages the development of drugs for rare diseases.
The $36 Campaign
ORRIN Hatch doesn't run a typical
campaign, with special clubs and favors for only the big
contributors. His campaigns are like Orrin -- accessible,
accountable, inclusive.
When Michele Hodgkins of Salt Lake
City heard that another candidate had raised $36 million, she wrote
a check for $36, beginning Senator Hatch's historic grassroots
campaign. "If one million ordinary people do this," she told Orrin,
"you'll have the same amount as the candidate with all the money."
Her generosity has spurred thousands from every state to contribute
as well, making this a real people's campaign.
Please join Orrin's Skinny Cat
Campaign. There is no reason that Presidential politics should be
left just to big contributors, the so-called "fat cats." Together,
we can make a difference and prove to the country that ideas are
more important than money, that experience is imperative, and that a
record is one thing that cannot be bought.
"WE NEED A CANDIDATE INDEBTED TO
THE PEOPLE, NOT THE MONEY."
Orrin Hatch
THREE strong traits are the
hallmark of Orrin Hatch's life -- service, hard work, and
perseverance. Born in 1934 to a family of modest means, Orrin grew
up near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From a young age, he worked to
help his family and to pay for school -- selling eggs door-to-door
and working as a janitor, an all-night desk clerk in a girls'
dormitory, and a metal lather like his father.
A graduate of Brigham Young
University, he received a full honors scholarship to the University
of Pittsburgh Law School. He practiced law in Pittsburgh and Utah
before taking on the "safest" Democrat Senator in the country in
1976, filing at the last minute on the last day. Orrin won a
surprising victory and began a distinguished and unparalleled
23-year career in the United States Senate, earning him the
reputation as one of America's most effective legislators.
Married for more than 42 years to
his wife Elaine, Senator Hatch has six children and 19 grandchildren
what Orrin calls his "greatest blessing" in a life that is a
testament to his beliefs.
"I AM THE ONLY CANDIDATE FOR
PRESIDENT WHO FOR 23 YEARS HAS BROUGHT CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES TO
WORK IN SOLVING AMERICA'S PROBLEMS, WHO HAS THE EXPERIENCE TO BE AN
EFFECTIVE PRESIDENT FROM DAY ONE, AND WHO HAS THE RECORD OF WORKING
WITH DIVERSE GROUPS TO ACTUALLY GET THINGS DONE."
